We are a leading disabled children’s charity that has been in existence for over 40 years.  We work to enable disabled children, young people and their families to enjoy their lives. Our vision is a world in which all disabled children and young people realise their aspirations and their right to an inclusive community which supports them and their families.  We offer Short Breaks and these mean that you child or young person can enjoy and experience activities that interest them with the support of a skilled Short Break worker.

This provider offers parents/carers a break from their caring responsibilities and time to spend with other family members and to catch-up on daily tasks.

Location: In the home setting or in the community. 

Date/time: as agreed with your chosen provider. 

Age range: 0-19 years.

Disabilities supported: for all children with disabilities or special needs.

Cost: The Buzz Network pays for the support worker's time, however if any activities are accessed or transport is provided, then parents/carers will need to pay for this.

Transport: Providers usually offer transportation, but this is charged. Where applicable, car child seats should be provided by parents or carers.

What does your service do?

KIDS is a national charity working towards a vision in which all disabled children and young people realise their aspirations, and their right to an inclusive community which supports them and their families. KIDS Short Breaks are an opportunity for you to have a break from caring for your disabled child or to get extra help in caring for them, while providing them with new and exciting opportunities.

The service offers an opportunity for you to use our trained short break workers in whichever way is best to meet your needs and the aspirations of your disabled child or young person. Our service is provided by DBS checked, trained, and supervised workers who share the KIDS ethos of inclusion. This service is available for all ages, from birth up to the age of 25 years.

Each working agreement is individually tailored to meet the needs of the young person and their families. KIDS can offer the following service through the Southampton Buzz Network Short Breaks:

One-to-one: A paid carer provides one-to-one support that enables a child/young person to access a range of community or leisure activities. The support worker may also accompany the family on an outing or hospital appointment etc.

Where is it located and what areas does it cover?

KIDS works closely with families throughout the whole of Southampton. Although we are based in Fareham we have a local co-ordinator who can set up a home visit with you and answer any queries directly.

KIDS has recruited staff in all areas of Southampton so you have a choice of a suitable carer.

All our work for families is geared to your personal circumstances, so this service does vary from family to family.

Who does your service provide for?

Children and young people must be signed up and eligible for the Southampton Buzz Network Short Breaks, or be able to pay through Direct Payments / Personal Budgets or self-funding.

KIDS covers children with all levels of disability, from 0-to 25 years in Southampton, and has done so for four years.

How can I start using the service?

There are 2 ways in which you can access our service:

1)    Referral – Referrals generally come through the Buzz network, or sometimes via Social Services. You can contact the Buzz Network coordinator on 023 8083 3014.

The amount of time available to use is determined by the Buzz network.

2)    Directly – The service can also be paid for using Direct Payments / Personal Budgets or self-funding.

If you wish to use your direct payments or self-fund, our hourly rate is £15.00 per hour.

Once a referral is received, our process is as follows: -

  •  KIDS will make contact with your family within two working days.
  • A home visit will be arranged wherever possible, at a convenient time for you.
  • At the home visit one of our Co-ordinators will bring the parent/carer information pack. Your child/young person’s portfolio and risk assessment will be completed with you and your child/young person (if they are available and able to contribute).
  • On completion of the portfolio the Co-ordinator will identify a suitable support worker. KIDS will endeavour to make the match as quickly as possible; however, this can take some time, particularly if recruitment is necessary to meet the requirements of your family. We are mindful of the importance of getting the right match if the link is to work successfully.
  • Contact will be maintained with your family on a weekly basis until the link is successfully made.
  • When the support worker (buddy) has been identified, a second home visit will be made to introduce the worker to your family. This will last around half an hour. The breaks can then be booked if both parties are satisfied; breaks are booked directly with the buddy once the link is made.

You have no responsibilities to the worker under employment law – if you want to swap a worker you just let us know, and we provide all training, insurance, and checks.

How are decisions made about who can use your service?

Decisions that are made about who uses the service comes via the Buzz network, who refer to us once their criteria has been met.

We do take referrals from the local authority (Social Services), and parents are also able to purchase hours via Direct Payments (DP), Personal Budgets (PB) or self-funding. Families with DP/PB can track their hours and purchase additional self-funded hours as required. This can be done at www.disabledchildren.org.uk

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making/planning?

When KIDS attend the initial home visit your child/young person can have an input into their portfolio, in terms of what activities they enjoy and where they would like to go with their buddy. When we introduce the buddy, your child/young person and the buddy can have a chat about what they would like to do on their break.

If your child/young person is unable to verbalise this then we will use their preferred method of communication, e.g.-

  • Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), a form of communication using a picture-pointing system
  • Makaton, an adapted version of sign language that is widely used by people with learning disabilities alongside speech
  • If your family’s first language is not English then we would have an interpreter attend the first initial home visit and we would give you a copy of our statement of purpose in your language.

We use PECS and Makaton for many of our families and wherever possible.

We also use outcome stars to record what the targets are and what your child/young person would like to achieve when out on a break. This could be anything from learning how to catch a bus to trying out new activities that they have not done before.

We have a dedicated website www.disabledchildren.org.uk which puts you in control of your hours and your breaks. You can easily update any changes to your child or young person’s support needs and it is easy to manage and available when you have the time – at any time of the day or night.

On this online system, parents can include their child/young person when booking breaks and leaving comments, if they are able to do so.

Breaks can be reviewed by parents/carers, children/young people and also our workers. This can be read by our supervisor; valuable comments, ideas and complaints can therefore be collated for reports and feedback, particularly on how the young person/ child is doing.

We do offer training for you on how to use our Direct Short Breaks system and we put on other events for parent support.

Is your service fully accessible?

KIDS direct one-to-one short breaks are delivered out in the community accessing activities that the young people would like to do, for example going to the park, cinema, bowling, to list a few. Our offices are based in Fareham and the centre is wheelchair accessible with changing facilities and good parking. Children/young people and workers are more than welcome to use the centre’s facilities; these include a sensory room, soft room, garden and family room.

Our service is open for all young people with additional needs. When we meet initially we would discuss with you where your child/young person would like to go, outline any risks that could occur and discuss the procedures to support these. If specific training is required for your child/young person then KIDS will arrange for this to be put in place.

If you have a lot of hours then KIDS would look at introducing a team of workers to you so you and your child/young person still have the consistency you need.

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had or are having?

KIDS has its own unique E-Learning (online) programme with modules of different levels (the E-learning is also used by twenty-four local authorities, so we know that it is tried and tested).

Levels 1 and 2 are mandatory for all workers, which means that staff have to pass these before they can do a break with your child/young person. Level 4 courses need to be in place when workers work with specific children. Topics from this training are:

Level 4

  • Makaton, an adapted version of sign language that is widely used by people with learning disabilities alongside speech
  • Medication and medical care: children and young people with multiple health requirements
  • Working with disabled young people 14+
  • Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), a form of communication using a picture-pointing system
  • British Sign Language

New workers will shadow more experienced staff before they do a lone session. In addition to the E-learning, KIDS also provides a rolling training programme for all of their staff which run termly. These include:

  • First aid
  • Administration of medication
  • Epilepsy
  • Manual handling
  • Team Teach (a behaviour management technique)
  • Safeguarding
  • Makaton

How will I know my child will be safe using this service?

In order to deliver services of the highest quality, KIDS recognises that the recruitment and retention of competent staff is of paramount importance. To ensure parents and carers can be confident that their support worker is of a good standard the following procedures are implemented:-

  • Each support worker will have submitted an application form identifying how he or she has met the person specification to become short-listed.
  • They will then attend a formal interview with the interview panel consisting of a parent/carer (when possible) and two KIDS employees (KIDS project manager/co-ordinator and a senior practitioner).
  • Two references will be taken up, including the most recent employer, and verbally confirmed.
  • An Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check will have been received before the worker is able to commence work.
  • Proof of identity, address and any qualifications achieved will have been checked.
  • An induction and minimum training programme will have been completed.
  • Access to ongoing training for all staff
  • Personal Development Plans, Supervision and Appraisals will take place in line with KIDS staff policies.

KIDS Direct Short Breaks are Care Quality Commission registered and we have yearly inspections to ensure that we meet the correct criteria.

Risk assessments.

Each young person will have a universal referral form completed along with a personal risk assessment which covers most activities which they will come across on a short break. When the workers review their breaks they can update the young person’s risk assessment on-line if any unanticipated risks are encountered. Where required, we will also complete a behaviour plan, manual handling risk assessment, or an epilepsy protocol for your child or young person.

How do I give feedback, make comments or raise concerns?

We welcome comments and suggestions about our services. If you tell us that the service is not quite working right or not quite of the standard you expect then we can do something about the situation.

If you are using the KIDS on-line system to book breaks then at the end of each break you can log onto your account and leave feedback from yourself or your child/young person:-

  • It will ask you how the break was - you can either pick poor, adequate, satisfactory, good or excellent. You can also add in your comments about the break.
  • If you rate the break as being poor or adequate it will send an alert to the supervisor of the project, who will contact you within three working days to discuss the issue(s).

If you do not use the on-line system and would like to leave a comment, give feedback or suggest improvements we recommend that you start by talking to the KIDS staff member that you know or have regular contact with. The staff member will ensure that their line manager and regional director are informed about your views. The regional director will act upon this as appropriate and inform you of any action taken within 14 working days of receipt.
