How does your education setting know if children/young people need extra help and what do I do if I think my child has special educational needs?

  • Consistent key person approach developing a professional relationship between you and a staff member to ensure you feel comfortable in sharing concerns you may have about your child’s development and progress
  • Child Profile packs completed upon registration where you are requested to share any concerns they may have regarding their child’s progress to date
  • Staring points are established based on information shared by you the parent in your child All About Me
  • Inclusion Policy in place (process of being reviewed)
  • 12-14 weeks summative reports that inform the child’s individual progress tracker. This is shared with you as the parent, so progress as well possible concerns can be highlighted. Next steps for learning are discussed and agreed. These steps are evaluated to ensure progress is being made
  • Weekly observations are made on individual children by their Key Person which is linked to the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage). These observations inform your child’s next steps for learning
  • Progress Checks at Two are completed, you are advised to share with their Health Visitor. This report is shared with you, any possible concerns are discussed and actions agreed to address these concerns
  • Parent consultations are held every six months or more frequently if required to meet a child’s individual needs
  • Setting SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) is available to talk to you regarding concerns you may have about your child’s progress

How will the education setting staff support my child / young person?

  • Your child will have a named first and second key person who will work with the setting SENCO
  • Play plans with specific targets will be devised with the setting SENCO and other relevant professionals to meet your child’s individual needs
  • With parental consent the setting will liaise with external agencies to meet your child’s individual needs
  • Your child’s key person and or setting SENCO will when invited attend external meetings and or appointments
  • The setting receives regular visits from Surrey Early Years to support individual children’s needs
  • With parental consent your child’s key person and or the setting SENCO will visit other early settings that your child attends
  • If appropriate we will apply for additional funding to support your child’s individual needs
  • Accurate assessment records are kept (both formative and summative) to ensure that you child’s progress is effectively monitored and additional action taken if required

How will the curriculum at your education setting be matched to my child / young person's needs?

  • Your child’s key person will devise personalised planning based on their significant observations and their identified next steps
  • Targets set within Play Plans are regularly monitored and reviewed. Where appropriate these targets will be set in liaison with relevant external agencies
  • Adult led experiences will be differentiated to ensure inclusion for all children
  • Adjustments to the continuous provision will be made to ensure inclusion for all children
  • If funding is accessed one to one support will be provided for your child to fully access all areas of the curriculum

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child / young person's learning?

  • Weekly wall planers are displayed on the parents notice boards
  • Your child’s key person will give you a verbal handover at the end of the session. If requested we will set up a home /school liaison book
  • A home visit can be arranged with your child’s key person

  • Where appropriate a Critical Care Plan is put in place to meet medical needs. This is regularly monitored and reviewed
  • The setting has a Critical Care Plan policy

  • Prior to starting at the setting   sessions will be booked for your child (we offer up to 8 weeks of free settling in sessions).These will be tailored to meet your child’s individual needs
  • Home visits will be offered to you as part of your settling in sessions
  • Where appropriate we will liaise with other settings that your child attends with parental consent
  • Where appropriate with parental consent we will liaise with other involved professionals prior to your child’s start date to ensure strategies and equipment are in place to meet your child’s individual needs
  • When your child is in transition to a new setting we will contact the setting with your consent to arrange for your child’s Key person and or setting SENCO to visit the setting
  • We will invite the new setting to our setting to enable them to discuss your child’s progress and achievements during his time with us
  • A summative report will be completed for you to give to the new setting
  • Your child’s Incredible Learning Journal will be given to you to share with the new setting
  • If appropriate your child’s key person can be actively involved in the transition process to the new setting

  • Where appropriate the setting will apply for Inclusion and Discretionary funding

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child /young person will receive?

When it is identified that your child has an additional need the setting will provide the relevant documentation to the LA to apply for Inclusion and Discretionary funding. They will ensure that this information is provided  within the given timescales

How are parents / young people currently involved in your education setting? How can I be involved?

  • You are encouraged to complete a Home Learning Story to document significant achievements /events at home ,this information will then be used to inform planning for your child
  • Parents evenings are held every 6 months
  • Parent questionnaires are used for you to express your views and opinions on what we do well and we can do better
  • Parents have access to a parent portal
  • A parent concern line is in place to enable you to express your views and opinions
  • Parent Events are held on a regular basis
  • Parent on line forums provide the opportunity for you to express your views and opinions and ask questions linked to specific elements of our service to both you and your child
