Child Protection Medical Service (Community Paediatricians)

For children and young people who may have experienced physical abuse, sexual abuse or neglect. Paediatricians undertake medical assessments of children and young people to identify any injuries or health needs related to abuse. Specialist equipment is available for the assessment of alleged sexual abuse, which may be acute, or historic (more than one week previously).

Referral Details

Health service professionals, the police and social services can refer. Children and young people aged 0-16 years (19 if attending a special school or with other learning difficulties, or already known to the Children in Care team) registered with a GP in the Southampton or South West Hampshire area who may have experienced acute or ‘historic’ physical or sexual abuse or neglect.

Social Services or police requesting a medical assessment will be asked to complete a brief referral form before the specialist nurse or on-call doctor calls back.
