Headway Southampton works with people from the age of 16 years who have experienced an acquired brain injury. This may result from assault, road traffic accident, stroke, tumour, cardiovascular attack, oxygen starvation or encephalitis. Through a personalised programme of reablement, they support people to recover their confidence and independence and help them to lead fulfilling lives within their community.
Headway Southampton offers a specialist day service at the Headway Centre, in an informal atmosphere, tailored to individual needs. The programme includes both rehabilitative and respite day care and seeks to maximise each person's potential. The activities at the Centre have been designed to re-establish social and daily living skills, which may have been lost or impaired.
The Centre seeks to help people with brain injuries to regain acceptance in society and where possible, to recover the optimum level of independence. A referral may be made through local health or social services or privately. In normal circumstances, a social services care manager will need to agree funding for a day service place, and will arrange transport, if this is required. The area covered includes Southampton, Eastleigh, Winchester and the New Forest.
