Southampton Mencap’s Day Service Programme is for people aged 18+ with a learning disability and is based at the Mencap Centre in Portswood which is located just a few miles from the City Centre. All services are well staffed by an experienced team and organised in small groups enabling them to access a whole range of opportunities. A person centred approach has been crucial in designing the bespoke programme of activities that individuals enjoy and which help them to meet other people, make new friends and learn practical skills to help them develop their independence skills. The following activities are available throughout the week:
Mondays - HandyCrafts
This is a fun, creative and practical day service for crafty people who enjoy participating in a range of fun, creative and practical activities. We offer this in a stimulating environment where everybody is given the support they need to craft beautiful and practical things for the home and learn essential and practical skills.
Tuesdays - Longdown Activity Farm
We are delighted to be working with Longdown Activity Farm, located in Ashurst, to provide a brilliant vocational-based opportunity for adults with a learning disability. It's an ideal choice for anyone who loves to be outside, working with animals, or for those who enjoy practical activities with achievable outcomes. Participants meet at the Mencap Centre where they are taken by mini-bus and then returned at the end of the day.
Tuesdays and Thursdays - Own2Feet
This two day internally certificated course has proved extremely successful and has provided a gateway to interesting learning and greater independence, offering an alternative to traditional day services. We are also able to offer people the option to access one day only.
Wednesdays - Cafe Down the Lane
A social enterprise run by local people with learning disabilities. Set in a charming setting, at our Mencap Centre,. which opens between 12.00 and 3.30pm on Wednesdays only. All food is home made on the premises by our apprentices and volunteer staff. We have occasional live music from guest entertainers. This is an ideal venue for groups and support outreach to meet and have a catch up.
Fridays - Home Kitchen
Our Home Kitchen group is a gateway to increased independence, worthwhile occupation and employment opportunities within the catering field and places a strong focus on healthy lifestyles.
