When a child first joins the setting they are registered onto our online learning journey ‘Tapestry’. A child will attend two settling in visits, the first is with the parent where we will fill out a section on Tapestry called ‘all about me’. This will then give the staff an overview of the child’s likes/dislikes and their learning and development.
After a few weeks of the child attending the setting we will complete a baseline assessment. This is checked against the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). We will then continue to monitor development throughout the year with observations and assessments.
If at any point you have any concerns about your child’s development then please feel free to talk to your child’s key worker or the settings Special Educational needs co-ordinator (SENCo).
Every child within the setting will have a Key Person. This Key Person is responsible for supporting your child within our setting. This involves their day to day routine as well as their overall development.
At our setting we have a dedicated Special Educational needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) who has a responsibility for overseeing the provision for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This person will liaise with the child’s Key Person to help promote your child’s development.
We work very closely with outside agencies to provide the best possible environment for your child. We follow any recommendations they suggest that will meet the needs of individual children.
Our setting is part of the Every Child a Talker (ECaT) project. This aims to improve communication and language skills of children, whilst also helping them to develop confidence as part of a small group.
Children are monitored continuously through observations. These observations then contribute to our planning where we plan for the child’s next steps.
These observations are tracked on Tapestry where we also encourage parents to upload observations from home.
We also liaise with outside agencies. We will agree on individual targets specific to a child and these will be written up onto an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). These are monitored and updated every 3 months or before if targets are met. These IEPs are shared with parents who can then work towards the same targets at home.
Parents are given regular feedback on their child. This happens through daily handovers and via Tapestry where they can view observations and see how these are linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
We also have a termly parents evening. We understand that it is hard to attend evenings so we encourage parents to book in slots throughout the day when it is convenient for them to attend.
We also provide home-school books for those parents that we do not see. They then have the opportunity to see their child’s progress at our setting and to also pass messages on to our staff.
Within the setting we follow children’s daily routines. We provide a home from home environment with emphasis on learning through play.
Staff are always available to give advice and support to parents.
All staff hold a paediatric first aid qualification and we are able to carry out any further training if necessary.
All new staff have to provide suitable references and a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check before they start at our setting.
We have appropriate policies and procedures which all staff read when joining the setting so everyone is working towards the same goal. These are also accessible online for parents to read.
We have a designated Early Years Advisory Teacher (EYAT). They support us with general advice and guidance and also with referrals to specialist teams. This could be to Speech and Language Therapy, Portage and physiotherapists.
We also have a link with a speech and language therapist who will regularly visit the setting to observe and monitor specific children. They will then liaise with the SENCo about those children’s targets.
Our nursery SENCo has attended and completed ‘The role of the early years Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator’ training.
The SENCo also attends termly inclusion conferences that are run by the EYATs. This keeps us up to date with all relevant information.
All trips will have an appropriate risk assessment and parental consent will be sought beforehand. We ensure that we have the appropriate child/staff ratio at all times. Parents are also welcome to attend and trips.
First aid kits will be taken with any specific medication that a child may need while out of the setting.
Our building is accessible via a ramp to make it wheelchair friendly. We have wide doorways and our setting is all set out on one floor.
We have a disabled toilet with shower facilities.
Our staff are trained in Makaton. We also have visual stimulation in the form of pictures around the setting for children with English as an additional language (EAL).
There is funding available for any specific equipment that you child may need.
Before your child starts at the setting you will be invited to two settling in sessions. During the first you will stay with your child to meet their key person and the staff team. You will leave your child during the second visit. This will allow the key worker/staff to get to know both yourself and your child and also for the child to become familiarised with the setting and the routine of the day.
When your child reaches the age where they will move into the next room you will receive a letter notifying you of the date and who their new key person will be. We will carry out internal visits before this date. You will also have the opportunity to meet their new key person.
When it is time for your child to start school we will forward our online learning journal (Tapestry) to them. This will provide the school with all the relevant information regarding your child’s development.
Some schools will arrange to visit our setting to see the children in their preschool environment.
If a child is eligible for funding for additional support then it will be used specifically to meet the individual needs of that child
Within our setting we will plan for each individual child. This will be done by using their next steps and interests.
We use the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to monitor and plan for the children’s development. This helps us to support children and identify any areas where they may need extra support.
If we need any extra support regarding a child then we will arrange, with your permission, an appointment with the Early Years Advisory Teacher (EYAT) who will visit us at the setting. The EYAT will then give us advice and support or any help with specific funding if needed.
We encourage parental involvement within our setting. We hold termly parents evenings to discuss your child’s development. However we are always available if you do wish to talk about any aspect of your child’s learning and development.
Parents can also monitor their child’s progress through Tapestry. Staff will upload regular observations, including pictures and videos. We also encourage parents to upload observations and comments from home.
