Weston Park Nursery, which is located within the school grounds of Weston Park infant school, is an integral part of the local community, delivering childcare to the highest standards.

We focus on encouraging children to value and respect others.  These core values support children in understanding others, their own needs and feelings as well as developing the ability to show empathy for others.

We follow the EYFS curriculum by planning for and providing exciting activities and themes to encourage children's development through play.

Opened in 2006, our fantastic Nursery is located in a purpose built building within the grounds of Weston Park Primary School with a pleasant wooded garden providing ample opportunities for children to get outside to explore and investigate.  Our team of professionals offer a tailored curriculum that is designed to stretch the child and support them in embracing new challenges within a stimulating and nurturing environment.

How does your education setting know if children/young people need extra help and what do I do if I think my child has special educational needs?

As part of our induction process we will ask parents if they are aware of any additional needs their child may have or if they have any concerns about their child having additional needs, this will include them being delayed in any area of development. This is discussed with the parents, keyperson, Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCo) and Manager to see what support needs to be put in place and if any funding or 1:1 support is required. We will put a plan in place to support the child as soon as they start with us and will review it as necessary.

If a staff member has any concerns, they will bring it to the SENCo’s attention who will observe the child, speak to the parents, ask for any agency support and put a plan in place that is reviewed regularly.

How will the education setting staff support my child / young person?

Each child is monitored termly to observe their development. If a child has an additional need then they will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Individual Behavior Plan (IBP) to support them to attend the setting and join in with the whole routine. This is done in partnership with the parents and regular meetings are held to discuss the plan which will be reviewed twice termly. The plan will support the child’s development and specify the resources and activities that will be put in place to support the child’s individual needs.

If funding is needed for resources or staffing the application for this will be completed in collaboration with the parent who can assist in providing evidence.

How will the curriculum at your education setting be matched to my child / young person's needs?

The IEP would outline additional activities that would be completed to support the child’s development to bridge the gap if there is a delay.

During induction, the key person would find out exactly what support is needed if this is developmental or health related and make sure that we have everything in place for the first session.

We would follow the child’s development alongside the curriculum helping them to meet age and stage appropriate targets and goals, using a tailored approach based on the child’s individual needs.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child / young person's learning?

We offer termly parents’ meetings to allow parents to look through the progress of their child and talk about this together ready for the new term. The IEP would also be reviewed twice termly to set new targets, this is done with the parent so we can work together in partnership and create consistency between pre-school and home.

What support will there be for my child / young person's overall wellbeing?

We regularly take account the children’s interests via observations, conversations and parent feedback. We then use this information to inform our planning. This data is factored into the learning opportunities and routines we implement. The Key person creates a special bond with their Key child and will not only monitor their developmental progress but also their well-being. If we have any concerns we will work with the child and parents to find positive, proactive solutions in making sure we are creating a safe, happy environment for the children to thrive in.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by your education setting?

Our staff have experience with a variety of additional needs and have attended courses to extend their knowledge.

Our staff have a wealth of experience with various SEND, we provide targeted intervention groups in order to support these children to make good progress. We work closely with outside agencies and professionals to support additional needs such as Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, the Early Years Advisory Teacher (EYAT) and any other professionals that are relevant to the child.

We will apply for funding if we feel the child will be entitled to/ benefit from it, such as EYSS funding and 1:1 support funding.

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEN and Disabilities had or are having?

Our staff have had training in the following areas;

  • Special Educational Needs.
  • Behavior management.
  • Every Child a Talker (ECaT) training.

SENCo has received Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) training.

All training is regularly refreshed.

How will my child / young person be included in activities including trips run by your setting?

This would be facilitated depending on the child’s needs, for example, if the child has 1:1 support then they would be able to join in with all trips and outings. Staff regularly take all children on offsite walks including those with SEND, therefore staff are equipped in supporting these children and each outing is assessed for accessibility and the children’s needs are accommodated for if necessary. Parents may also be asked to be involved. It is our aim to make all trips as inclusive as possible.

How accessible is your education setting? ( indoors and outdoors)

Our building and garden are wheelchair friendly with large doorways and no stairs at any part of the building. We have two large disabled toilets and our resources and furniture are all child height.

How will the education setting prepare and support my child / young person to join the education setting, transfer to a new setting and or the next education stage and life?

Our building is located within the grounds of a primary school, who we work closely with to aid the transition from Preschool to Reception year. The children have settling in visits to the school prior to them leaving us and we work closely with the Head of Year R and the schools SENCo.

For our new starters we offer settling in visits which are entirely based on the child’s needs, they are completely flexible and can take as long as necessary to make sure the child is completely comfortable before starting with us.

How are the education setting resources allocated and matched to children and young people's Special Educational Needs and disabilities?

We have a range of resources to support different needs. We use visual aids to support children in understanding the routine and adapt/ differentiate activities to include all children.

We will apply for funding if we feel a child would benefit from additional resources specific to their needs.

Our SENCo has a good knowledge of funding applications that can be made and we will take the time to make sure resources are tailored to the child’s individual needs in order to support their development.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child /young person will receive?

The Manager, SENCo and parents will discuss the individual needs of the child, and a plan will be agreed. We will implement an I.E.P and involve the EYAT who can then advise us on what funding the child may be eligible for.  

How are parents / young people currently involved in your education setting? How can I be involved?

We have monthly stay and play sessions that the parents can attend, as well as walks and outings.

Termly parent meetings provide opportunities for parents to talk to us about any queries or concerns, or just catch up on your child’s progress with their keyperson.

The Keyperson is on hand to discuss with you your child’s day and answer any questions you may have.

We make regular updates on our social media, putting up pictures and videos of the children involved in fun activities. We have a bi – weekly newsletter, which informs parent’s what we are focusing on, some home learning ideas, plus any updates or upcoming events we are holding.

We have an open-door policy so parents can stay and play anytime.

Other parent events also happen throughout the year.
