This page provides information and links to organisations that can provide help and advice on money matters and benefits.

Where to get free debt advice

If you’re struggling with debt, it can be hard to know where to turn. But with lots of free, confidential help and advice services available, there’s no need to use a fee-charging debt management company.

You can get free on line debt advice from StepChange Debt Charity or you can call them on 0800 133 1111. You can also go on line to the National Debtline or call them on 0808 808 4000.

If you would prefer to talk to someone face to face you can book an appointment with Southampton Citizens Advice Bureau. Telephone number is 03444 111 306.

How can I be sure I'm getting the right entitlements?

The benefits system is complex and often changes, which means many people are not claiming money that they’re entitled to. Read this page to make sure you’re not missing out on benefits that could help you balance your budget.

Use a benefit calculator

Find out what benefits you could claim by using the link above which connects you to the benefit calculators on the GOV.UK website. You can see the benefits, tax credits and pension available to you and also compare estimates to see what you could get if your situation changes. They also show you how much Universal Credit you might be entitled to.

Universal Credit and changes to the benefits system

As of 22 February 2017, Universal Credit has been introduced in Southampton and replaces a number of benefits.
